Day 36: Ecclesiastes 7:15-181 min read

These verses talk about both the unfairness of life, but also the importance of living righteously and wisely despite the disparity that exists.

Verse 15 says, “There is a just man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs life in his wickedness.”

So true, so true. Many godly people die at an early age while extremely wicked people live long. But the opposite is always true. But it still seems unfair how some people die young after living godly lives while others do damage in the world and live to be old.

But then comes a timely warning: “Do not be overly righteous, nor be overly wise,” and likewise, “Do not be overly wicked, nor be foolish.”

The fact that many righteous people die young and many wicked people live long shouldn’t have any bearing on whether you live righteously or sinfully. The only motivation we should have for how we live our lives is the glory of God.

As Solomon said, “???Why should you destroy yourself?” Those who try to be excessively righteous are Pharisees and will destroy themselves. Those who live wickedly will also destroy themselves.

Our lives need to be characterized by righteous but wise living so that we do everything for the glory of God.

Do not be too righteous or overly wise,
For why should you bring about your demise?
Nor live in sin and hasten your fall,
But he who fears God will escape them all.
